5-Minute Philosophy Skills
I spend the first 5 minutes of undergraduate tutorials focusing on a key skill that students need to develop for reading, writing, and thinking about philosophy. Students have been very positive about this, and a similar format is now used by many tutors at Edinburgh. You can see some example handouts here.
“Natalie is the best philosophy tutor I’ve had. She’s really friendly and approachable so everyone feel[s] comfortable to get involved in the discussion. She really helps to clarify the lectures and draw out the key issues, and her small group discussion structure is helpful so we all share ideas.”
“Good tutor, helped me improve my critical thinking skills and essay writing. She was very engaging.”
Mentoring & Training
From 2013-15 I provided formal training for new philosophy tutors at the University of Edinburgh. This involved observing tutorials, moderating marking, providing feedback on essay comments, and general mentoring. I also co-ran the following 'professional development seminars' at Edinburgh:
“Natalie’s study skills at the beginning of each tutorials are really useful. Tutorials are well structured. Nice environment in her tutorials, not intimidating.”
“Really easy to get on with, helped us engage with the course material well and made a real difference to my understanding of it.”
“I really enjoy Natalie’s tutorials, I find them very interactive and they always clear up any issues I have from lectures. She is very supportive when people speak out in tutorials and always involves everyone. I find them very enjoyable; and have specifically chosen her as a tutor this term following last year with Natalie as my tutor.”
“The other tutors for philosophy courses do not compare to the experience of being tutored [by] Natalie. Thank you!”
